MEET THE SUP46 TEAM – COLIN

Ever wondered how we manage to keep an office of roughly 250 people running? It all comes down to the person in our core team that heads up the title of Service Coordinator, his name is Colin. He is in charge of making sure the walls are intact, the coffee keeps flowing, that we are as safe as we can possibly be and basically a hundred or so additional, equally important tasks. To his help he has a team of volunteering Service Interns that he manages.

  • How did you end up at SUP46?

Most of my previous work experience has revolved around administrative support roles in law firms and consulting businesses, but I have a very diverse skill-set and have worked in landscaping, restaurants, pool management and a little carpentry too. I honestly didn’t have much experience with, or knowledge of the startup world, but now that I’m being exposed to it I am completely intrigued. Having so many bright, motivated and passionate people in one place is an absolute goldmine.

I moved to Stockholm to be with my then girlfriend, now fiancé Paula. I had been in Sweden for about 4 months and had been applying for every job under the sun. It’s not an easy job market when you aren’t fluent in Swedish, and it can be a bit daunting. When I came across the posting for the Service Coordinator, however, I thought it really described me to a T and I got excited about the prospect immediately. I came in for my first interview and found the lobby full of people drinking beer and playing a foosball tournament and thought to myself: “I sure hope this is the right place.” I hadn’t heard about SUP46 before then, but the more I learn every day, the more fortunate I feel to be part of this team.

  • What does your role at SUP46 entitle?

As Service Coordinator, I am in charge of office practicalities, i.e. keeping the place running smoothly. That covers everything from keeping the coffee flowing, to security, fire safety, handyman stuff, cleaning, managing interns and quite a bit of administrative work as well. Please let me know if there is anything that needs to be fixed, could be potentially dangerous, or is simply an inconvenience. Being that the company and office are relatively new, I think there is always room for improvement redesign and evolution.

  • What do you like best about your job?

It’s very busy. I think that a job that keeps one from watching the clock is important. I am really beginning to enjoy the challenge of prioritizing tasks in order to maintain the office and keep everything in good working order. Besides that, as I previously said, I get to work with incredible people. The SUP46 staff are all wonderfully friendly and welcoming, and the members are an amazing group of people as well. It’s also nice to have a job where you can get up from your computer and swing a hammer for a while. Most people don’t get the chance to do both.

  • If you were starting your own scalable business tomorrow, what would it be all about?

I’m very interested in indoor factory farming. I believe it’s the future of agriculture, and ecologically and economically, it’s is one way to feed the masses without destroying the environment. Indoor farms reduce water use drastically, remove the need for pesticides and as they can be built in metropolitan areas, the food can be delivered directly without the need for a lot of trucks. Obviously this is a large scale business which is already being implemented, but I find it fascinating.

  • How did you end up at SUP46?

I have always been interested in the startup scene with its passionate and driven believers. And it’s both the inside and the outside that interests me, meaning that I’m as passionate of an entrepreneur set out to start and develop my own business to conquer the world, as helping others do the same.

So, I consider myself very lucky to have a background in both running my own business as well as helping other startups and small companies grow (mainly through business and market strategy consulting projects).

As I was moving back to Sweden from Los Angeles in Fall 2015, I started to map out the Swedish startup landscape and soon realized that SUP46 was the place to be. I kept my eyes open until an opening came, applied for it and can now proud myself of saying that I’m part of one of the best ecosystems in the world. Ultimately, my passion for the startup scene and my desire to help startups at a larger scale was what led me to SUP46, and I’m super happy to be able to do what I love.

  • What does your role at SUP46 entitle?

In my role as the Community Manager I manage the whole SUP46 Community 😉 That means I take care of all the members of the Community, including Startup Companies, Partners, Sponsors, Investor Members, our Global Friends and Mentors.

My main responsibility is to make sure that everyone has what they need to be able to do their job even better and succeed! How I do that is mostly by connecting people/companies who can benefit from each other or each other’s services. It can be by matching investors with startups in the right stage of fundraising, or making sure our startups benefit from our partner’s expertise in financing, legal advice, IT services, strategic decisions, etc. It can also be by connecting the startups with each other to open up for knowledge exchange within the community (there’s a lot of knowledge here, trust me!), or finding and making external deals and talent that our members are looking for accessible.

To make this happen, I regularly organize workshops, seminars, 1-1 meetings, Office Hours, mentorship meet-ups and other formal and informal events and activities. Lastly, I’m responsible for the internal communication so if you want to get in contact with our members for any reason, you’re welcome to reach out to me!

  • What do you like most about your job?

Everyone in the SUP46 Community is very open and friendly and willing to contribute with what they can, I think that’s what I enjoy the most with SUP46. It makes my job of creating a powerful community so much easier!

What really makes my day is when someone comes up to me and thanks me for something I helped them with (a great introduction, a new connection, a meeting that I facilitated, etc), it really is the best feeling and makes me confident that I contribute to the development of our members.

And of course, all the new connections and great people I get to meet from all around the world is an enormous bonus of working at SUP46!

  • If you were starting your own scalable business tomorrow, what would it be all about?

There are soo many interesting fields (which is another benefit of working at SUP46, that I get to be part of many different things). I get super excited about everything that makes it easier for people/businesses to progress, improve and create the life they want, ultimately reaching their goals. I think where we’re heading within AI and VR will be very interesting to see.

Outside of SUP46 I’m also part of a project that connects exceptionally skilled and innovative students with startup projects and I see a lot of interesting opportunities here. Although there are cooler and bigger stuff that can be done, I think the way we work is changing fast and I find it interesting to work on solutions for being part of forming how the new workspace will look.

  • What is SUP46 to you in one word?

Possibilities! We are committed to providing the best environment to unlock new opportunities for our members to succeed.

Opening Startup Café by SUP46

Startup Café by SUP46 is open for business

On Monday morning we were even more excited than we usually are about the start of a new week. After months of planning, building, tasting and preparing we finally got to open up the doors to Startup Café by SUP46. It turned out to be a great day and we want to thank everyone that has already visited and of course also for all the kind words we have received both in person and through other channels.

A special thanks to our very first guest barista Annie Lööf, who made coffees like a boss and also of course to AMF Fastigheter for all the support in making this café happen.

Last night we got the opportunity to talk more about the café during Sthlm Tech Meetup, where we also gave everyone present clip cards with a free coffee. Hope to see some of you lovely people in the café shortly!

More photos from the opening day can be found here. If you want to read more about the café or the possibilities to rent it for your event or gathering, this is where to go.

And last but not least, thanks for all the great suggestions on names for the Breakfast Package in the café! We received more than 60 awesome suggestions and in the end went for Break First, which was suggested by Jean-François Wipf on LinkedIn.
